PostHarvest Academy was borne of a passion to help players in the fresh produce and cut flower industry to think better so they can operate better in this very competitive industry. The Academy was founded and is headed by Charles Whitehead, retired head of the Department of Botany and Plant Biotechnology at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, holder of an MSc and PhD in the postharvest physiology of cut flowers, with a postdoctoral study on the same subject from the University of California at Davis. With more than 40 years' experience in the postharvest physiology and technology of fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers, I authored and co-authored numerous publications, supervised many postgraduate students, presented post-harvest training courses to the industry, and consulted numerous local and international growers, fresh produce markets, market agents, canners, ripeners and retailers.
